Râșnov Citadel: Discover history and adventure in the heart of Transylvania
If you happen to be near the city of Brașov, don't miss the chance to visit Râșnov Citadel, one of the best-preserved peasant fortresses in Transylvania. Easily accessible by personal car or through rent-a-car services in Brașov, this citadel offers a true journey into medieval times.
Râșnov Citadel: a medieval fortress
Located on the Brașov-Rucăr-Câmpulung road, Râșnov Citadel is known as a "Peasant Citadel" because it was built by farmers, not professional craftsmen. The simple architectural style, similar to that of ordinary houses but adapted for fortification purposes, has been preserved for over 500 years, offering visitors a true glimpse into the past.
Authentic medieval atmosphere
As soon as you enter the citadel, you'll be greeted by horse tournaments, sword fights between knights, archery, and spear throwing—activities that recreate the atmosphere of those times. The spectacle captivates both children and adults, giving everyone the chance to imagine themselves as one of the knights aiming to win the hand of the beautiful princess.
What to discover at Râșnov Citadel
The citadel's guide will present its history and lead you through the 30 houses within the enclosure, including the school, chapel, and the priest’s residence. Among the places to visit is also the Feudal Art Museum, where you’ll find armor, weapons, and period furniture on display. More unusual objects, such as torture masks and yokes used for transporting prisoners, offer insight into the past.
You can also try your hand at archery or purchase authentic souvenirs, semi-precious stone jewelry, or books about the local history and traditions.
The legend of the well at Râșnov Citadel
Like many other historical buildings, Râșnov Citadel is shrouded in legend: the Legend of the Well. The citadel’s well, 146 meters deep, was dug between 1625 and 1640. The legend says that two Turkish prisoners dug the well for 15 years, writing verses from the Quran on the walls, with the promise that they would be freed. In reality, the well was created by Saxon craftsmen hired by the Râșnov municipality and was used until 1850.
