Latest inventions in the car industry – Continental Sensor System in the new VOLVO XC60 / S60

Imagine a Sunday without Top Gear show on Discovery channel…a PERFECT one! in my case :)  Being almost forced to watch this show every time it’s on this channel, I realised that I might also find out interesting things, that can increase my knowledge in this ever stunning domain…of CARS! Because this time, I found out a very spicy detail on one of the most famous car brands in the world and also most secure, I believe I can also share to you, our EuroCars‘ friends.

So, let me tell you about this Continental Sensor System in the new VOLVO XC60. Fancy name :)  Let’s get serious, and talk about real facts. You might not be surprised to find out that the risk of rear-end collisions is particularly great in city traffic with its constant alternation between braking and accelerating. True! A number of 75 % of the accidents recorded by the police occur at speeds below 30 km/h. It is precisely at these speeds, in slow-moving or “stop and go” traffic, that this sensor system, developed and manufactured by Continental around the Closing Velocity (CV) sensor, reduces the risk of a rear-end collision.

How does it work? Fitted level with the inside mirror in the area cleaned by the windshield wiper, the sensor uses three infrared beams to probe the road up to some six meters in front of the vehicle. In this case, the sensor picks up vehicles which are stationary or traveling in the same direction. If the gap is less than the distance which must be regarded as critical at the current speed, the system causes the brakes to be applied automatically. Pretty clever, huh?

Theoretically, if the maximum speed differential between the vehicles would be of 15 km/h, a rear-end collision would be avoided in most cases. And, at greater relative speeds, the severity of the impact would be considerably minimised. At the same time, the City Safety system optimizes occupant protection by providing additional data to the airbag control unit and triggering the restraint systems as required. Like the front and side airbag initiation sensors, this is also a Continental product.

All clear until now. But let’s see what happens when the theory is put into practice. Just today, when I was looking for additional information about this innovating system that had really got me started into promoting this cool stuff from Volvo, I came across an article that totally changed my opinion in this aspect.

Let’s see how, at a media event in Sweden, the Swedish manufacturer chooses to show off its latest technology: the new collision detection system on the S60.  Because the theory you already know it: the sensors in the car detect obstacles in the road ahead, applying the brakes to slow or even stop the car before a big crunchy mess occurs.

As you can well see it…it was not a success. What did Volvo said about it? The blame in the failure of the technology was a battery issue which, would have been easily spotted by a human driver. Of course, as they claimed, the collision detection system had also worked perfectly several times before the crash.

Maybe the sensors have failed, but as we can see, if there had been a driver in the driver’s seat, he would have been in safety, because the S60′s crash structures were effective.

Must recognise that it was a surprise, but still believe that Volvo can put it together, because the safest cars in the world still belong to this Swedish brand!

What to “wear” this fall – winter of 2010?

Such as clothes, depending on the season, we all change our seasonally habits. Because of the cold, we put an extra sweater, and start to wear boots instead of flip flops :) It is than normal to start considering that weather conditions will surely affect our safety, our health, so measures are needed. Like an extra sweater, we put winter tires to our cars, like boots, we choose snow chains, just in case…

Definitely convertibles are not to wear this winter, so jump soon into 4 wheel drive cars for this year’s fall-winterCar Winter holidays.  Beside the fact that these cars are for sure the best deal you can make in our country, being brand new, and not that expensive, you will be able to discover Romania’s greatest areas, where snow will be present beginning the end of OctoberNovember.

And being said from the beginning that we are talking about what is “fashionable”, let’s jump into car area:

Maybe you are not aware that, despite experiencing turbulent years in the automotive market, Chevrolet, Ford, and Subaru have benefited from a dramatic increase in overall brand perception among car owners this year. According to Consumer Reports 2010 Car Brand Perception Survey, all three saw at least a 30-point increase in their overall perception scores over last year’s scores. The scores reflect how consumers perceive each brand in seven categories:

Safety, quality, value, performance, design/style, technology/innovation, and environmentally friendly/green.

Remember, these 3 car brands have increased their image related to 2009, but the leader remains Toyota, forever friendly to the environment, well fitted to all year’s seasons: from the smallest to the largest! As you well know it, we are also a big Toyota fan, this brand being also, our client’s great attraction, next to our “home made” Logan :)

Now you know what are the market’s reactions to car brands…let’s find out how the weather is going to be this 2010…what remains of it!

  • October - cold
  • November - colder
  • December - the coldest:)

Experts claimed that this winter,  Europe is going to meet the worst winter in the last millennium, so please make sure to ask for equipped cars and all safety measures possible.

Dacia Duster made in Romania

After the successive launches of Logan, Sandero, Logan MCV and pickup, Dacia took a big step on the 4×4 market with their Dacia Duster. The Romanian brand unveiled the production version of the Dacia Duster which has already gone on sale in the spring of 2010. The car is a lot different than the Duster concept unveiled by Dacia & Renault at the Geneva Motor Show back in March, but it still looks like an SUV.

The new Dacia Duster will be available in two versions: 4×2 and 4×4 and under the hood it will hide a 1.6L 16V petrol engine that will provide 110 HP but it also come with two diesel engine options: a 85 dCi and a 105 dCi. These diesel engines have low emissions of just 140g of CO2/km in the 4×2 version and 150g of CO2/km in the 4×4 version.

The 2010 Dacia Duster SUV is a tough, reliable and easy to use 4×4 which is aimed at motorists looking for a daily driver with real off road ability and of course, it’s aimed for those who want a cheaper SUV. The car measures 4.31 meters in length and 1.82 meters in width and it has a 200 mm ground clearance with an approach angle of 30 degrees and a departure angle of 35 degrees.

The production version of the Dacia Duster will come with a Bosch 8.1 ABS, en EBV electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist. The car weights only 1.180 kg in 4×2 and 1,280 kg in 4×4 and its price is going to be announced in a couple of months, depending on the market where it go on sale.

British tourist…check out this car before the release in the UK! The ‘Renault for the budget conscious’ brand Dacia are to launch their cars in the UK starting in 2012, despite telling us when they revealed the Duster in December they had no plans for a UK launch.

The rise and rise of Dacia is a remarkable phenomenon. From nowhere in 1999 when Renault bought Dacia, it’s been transformed in to a producer of budget cars for emerging markets. 1.25 million Dacias have been sold in the last five years and, with consumers in traditional car markets becoming ever more budget aware, Renault feels the Dacia will find a ready market. They’ve already had success on mainland Europe and now they’re biting the bullet to make RHD cars.

The same success we notice for Dacia in car rental business, more than 15% of rented cars by EuroCars are Dacia, at this moment the star is Dacia Duster, initially was included in the rent a car Bucuresti offer and because of the success, now is present in the rent a car TimisoaraBrasov, and Bacau offers and soon in all our rental locations.

But Dacias are not exactly the Lada of the 21st century. In a similar way to Hyundai, they have moved quality upmarket but kept prices sensible. The new Dacia Duster is a budget-busting compact SUV – Skoda Yeti Sized – offering 1.5 litre diesel with 104bhp or a 1.6 petrol with 84bhp. And you can opt for 2WD or 4WD. An prices start at a very reasonable €11,900. Including tax.

One thing we will have to learn if Dacia are coming to the UK is how to pronounce it. We say ‘Day-see-er’. Which is apparently wrong. We should be saying ‘Dat-ch-a’, in our best Romanian accent. But I think Renault may have a job on their hands convincing Brits to pronounce it their way.

But whatever way you say it, you will be able to buy the Dacia Duster in RHD from 2012. And if you want to know what’s on offer, check out the Dacia Duster Press Release.
